We recommend the Homework assignment for assessments:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Which require handwritten submission.&nbsp; (Gradescope will also accept typed work and images).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which involve multiple questions or tasks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Where staff need to focus on marking a particular section of an assessment (eg. all&nbsp; answers for question 1).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example scenario:<\/strong> For example, if an assessment requires four different questions, you can create an appropriate <strong>question outline<\/strong> (eg. question 1, question 2 etc) during setup.\u00a0 Once the assessment is released students see the question outline within Gradescope.\u00a0 During submission students &#8216;tag&#8217; each page \/ image to associate it with a relevant question. Once work is submitted staff can select a question title to view and grade all submissions for that question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"setup-workflow\" class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-da79a4a7 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\" style=\"border-bottom-color:var(--wp--preset--color--base-2);border-bottom-width:2px;padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-base-2-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e673bd8d341d5b939169f9fd566bf29b\" style=\"padding-top:0px;padding-right:0;padding-bottom:0px;padding-left:0\"><strong>Assignment setup<\/strong> and workflow<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step is to create your assignment in Canvas, choosing the assignment type&nbsp;<strong>External tool<\/strong>&nbsp;and selecting Gradescope. For full step-by step instructions see&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.elearning.fse.manchester.ac.uk\/getting-started-with-canvas\/how-do-i-set-up-a-gradescope-assignment-in-canvas\/\">How do I set up a Gradescope assignment in Canvas<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have launched Gradescope within Canvas you will be asked to choose your assignment type. Follow the instructions below for setting up your Homework Assignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For the assignment type select <strong>Homework\/Problem Set <\/strong>and then click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Assignment Name<\/strong>: Enter your assignment title<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Template<\/strong>: You will need to upload an assignment brief for your students. The file must be a PDF and could simply be a list of the questions that students need to respond to. Choose <strong>Select PDF<\/strong>, then locate and select an appropriate document.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Submission anonymization:&nbsp;<\/strong>Enable anonymous marking, if you have decided to use this feature.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Who Will Upload Submissions?<\/strong>: Leave as<strong> Student<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Release date: <\/strong>Set the date and time that the you will also need to publish the assignment link in Canvas or create a separate menu link for students to access Gradescope.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Date date: <\/strong>Enter an appropriate due date.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Allow Late Submissions<\/strong>: Allow Late to submission to ensure students with DASS requirements can submit beyond the main deadline.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Submission Type<\/strong>: Choose <strong>Variable length<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Create your Rubric<\/strong>: Choose the option that you prefer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Template Visibility<\/strong>: Ticking this checkbox will allow students to view and download the document you have uploaded.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose <strong>Create Assignment <\/strong>to save the settings you have selected. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once you\u2019ve entered some initial details for your assignment in Gradescope, you will return to Canvas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose&nbsp;<strong>Select<\/strong>&nbsp;to navigate away from the popup box, then tick the checkbox&nbsp;<strong>Load this tool in a new Canvas assignment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once your assignment has been saved you will return to the Assignments screen. You can access and manage the assignment via the&nbsp;<strong>Assignments<\/strong>&nbsp;menu, opening your assignment link and then choosing&nbsp;<strong>Load Gradescope in a new window<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-da79a4a7 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\" style=\"border-bottom-color:var(--wp--preset--color--base-2);border-bottom-width:2px;padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-base-2-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6c3084550c4a825d5d4ac3c8f74e7941\" id=\"question-outline\" style=\"padding-top:0px;padding-right:0;padding-bottom:0px;padding-left:0\"><strong>Creating a Question Outline<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>After creating your assignment, you will need to create a question outline and determine how many points each question is worth. As you build the outline, a total point tally for the assignment will appear at the top of the page.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If required you can create sub questions by selecting the + symbol next to an existing question.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To delete a question select the red X icon next to a question.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.teachingcollege.fse.manchester.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/outline-2.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Once you are happy with your question outline choose <strong>Save Outline.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you need to make changes to your question outline open the assignment from within your Canvas course and then within Gradescope select <strong>Edit Outline<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-da79a4a7 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\" style=\"border-bottom-color:var(--wp--preset--color--base-2);border-bottom-width:2px;padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-base-2-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5f630506cf7fc2e831657e32c47e24b2\" id=\"create-rubric\" style=\"padding-top:0px;padding-right:0;padding-bottom:0px;padding-left:0\"><strong>Creating a rubric<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Gradescope allows you to create a rubric in advance or on the fly during grading.&nbsp; We recommend that you create your rubric before students submit to avoid any delays to grading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The question outline and points values created at <strong>Edit<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Outline&nbsp;<\/strong>stage will provide an outline for you to build your rubric. By default the&nbsp;<strong>C<\/strong><strong>reate Rubric<\/strong>&nbsp;screen will show one&nbsp;<strong>rubric item<\/strong> underneath each question.&nbsp; Each rubric item will contain both a <strong>point value&nbsp;<\/strong>and box to enter your&nbsp;<strong>rubric item description.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">For example in the screenshot below each question has a maximum points value of 25 points.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone wp-image-6158 size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.teachingcollege.fse.manchester.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/GS-Create-rubric.jpg\" alt=\"Create Rubric Screen\" class=\"wp-image-6158\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Create Rubric Screen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click on a rubric item to edit the points value and item description.&nbsp; You can add additional rubric items by click on&nbsp; <strong>+ Add Rubric Item<\/strong>. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on the cog icon next to <strong>Rubric Settings&nbsp;<\/strong>to edit the&nbsp;<strong>scoring methods&nbsp;<\/strong>(positive or negative) and&nbsp;<strong>score bounds<\/strong> (the maximum or minimum points for a question).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Rubric items and settings can be imported and reused across different questions or assignments.
