Managing groups in Canvas is straightforward once you know where to look. This guide explains how to join a group, leave a group, or switch to another group within your course. Please note that you will only see the People<\/strong> menu (where groups are managed) if your instructor has made this menu visible in your course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    How to join a group<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    1. Open the course unit that contains the group you want to enrol in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2. From the course navigation menu, select People<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    3. On the People page, click the Groups<\/strong> tab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    4. You\u2019ll see a list of available groups you can join. Choose the group you\u2019d like to join and click Join<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    How to leave a group<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    1. Next to the group you\u2019re in, click Leave<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2. A green confirmation message will appear at the top of your browser to confirm you\u2019ve left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    How to switch groups<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    When a course has several groups in the same group set, you can move from one to another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Click the Switch To<\/strong> button next to the group you want to join.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. You\u2019ll automatically leave your current group and join the new one.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. A green confirmation message will appear at the top of your browser to confirm the change. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Navigating your group space<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

      A group space is available to help you collaborate with other group members. You can access the group space within your course unit or via the Global Navigation menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Access from within your course unit<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. To access the group space within your course unit, click on People<\/strong> menu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      2. In the People area, open the Groups<\/strong> tab.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      3. For any groups that you have joined, click the Visit<\/strong> link next to your group name.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        Access from the Global Navigation menu<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        1. Select Groups<\/strong> in the purple left-hand menu.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          2. Click on the name of your group to open the group space. Once you\u2019ve accessed your group, you\u2019ll see a dedicated space with tools to help you work collaboratively:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          • Announcements<\/strong> \u2013 post updates for everyone in the group.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Discussions<\/strong> \u2013 create discussion threads where group members can reply.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Pages<\/strong> \u2013 build shared pages with text and media. Click Save<\/em> to publish.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Files<\/strong> \u2013 upload and share documents by clicking the purple Upload<\/em> button.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Collaborations<\/strong> \u2013 set up shared documents (e.g. notes, group papers) that everyone can edit together.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
