The transition to Canvas will require your familiarity with both the <strong>Canvas Template<\/strong> and also the <strong>Canvas Course Standards<\/strong>. Use the below essential guides as a companion to this page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Essential Guides:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>UoM Canvas Template<\/strong> has been designed to create a consistent format of information across all course units: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elearning.fse.manchester.ac.uk\/getting-started-with-canvas\/canvas-course-template\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Orientate yourself with the Canvas Template<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>UoM Canvas Course Standards<\/strong> expand on the Template to outline the minimum requirements for a Canvas space. Each Canvas course unit must adhere to the defined minimum set of required standards (r). This shows your published and unpublished course units. When your 2025-26 course spaces becomes available, they will appear in your Dashboard in the <strong>unpublished section<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will be able to see:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Migrated spaces <\/strong>(with migrated Blackboard content). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Teaching spaces<\/strong>  these are the spaces that will need to be populated and will eventually be published to your students.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Legacy spaces<\/strong> (these are courses from previous years, no action is required for these spaces).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-base-2-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-abf862eaaf175e840f6ed4657fa7111e\" id=\"update-template\" style=\"border-bottom-color:var(--wp--preset--color--base-2);border-bottom-width:2px;padding-top:10px;padding-right:0;padding-bottom:10px;padding-left:0\"><strong>Step 2: Update the course unit template<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your <strong>Teaching space<\/strong> course units will already contain a basic <strong>course unit template<\/strong> that you will need to update with information specific to your course unit. For more information check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elearning.fse.manchester.ac.uk\/getting-started-with-canvas\/canvas-course-template\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canvas Course Template guidance page<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-base-2-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c1cb9a2649b79798a75d0395fe9e4017\" id=\"find-migrated-content\" style=\"border-bottom-color:var(--wp--preset--color--base-2);border-bottom-width:2px;padding-top:10px;padding-right:0;padding-bottom:10px;padding-left:0\"><strong>Step 3: Find your migrated Blackboard content<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your migrated Blackboard content will appear in its own holding space in Canvas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Migrated spaces<\/strong> will have the pre-fix <strong>BB_Migration<\/strong> eg. &#8216;BB_MIGRATION I3132-COMP-1001-1241-1YR&#8217;. These spaces will not have students attached. If so, read our guide on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elearning.fse.manchester.ac.uk\/getting-started-with-canvas\/bulk-downloading-blackboard-course-files\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.elearning.fse.manchester.ac.uk\/getting-started-with-canvas\/bulk-downloading-blackboard-course-files\/\">bulk downloading Blackboard course files<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-base-2-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a43da03c2f70a49fc2f9bb32774d0add\" id=\"review-migrated-content\" style=\"border-bottom-color:var(--wp--preset--color--base-2);border-bottom-width:2px;padding-top:10px;padding-right:0;padding-bottom:10px;padding-left:0\"><strong>Step 4: Review your migrated Blackboard content<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Have a look at how the content has been brought across from Blackboard and consider whether it is better to <strong>copy course content from your migrated Blackboard content space<\/strong> or <strong>start afresh and build your course anew<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the majority of your learning materials are in HTML format, the following guide will help you understand how to optimise their presentation in Canvas: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elearning.fse.manchester.ac.uk\/getting-started-with-canvas\/canvas-migration-and-html-files-2\/\">Canvas Migration and HTML Files.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-base-2-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-bd8672616b7ee26951d93f77d304c233\" id=\"add-course-content\" style=\"border-bottom-color:var(--wp--preset--color--base-2);border-bottom-width:2px;padding-top:10px;padding-right:0;padding-bottom:10px;padding-left:0\"><strong>Step 5: Add your course unit content<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on your evaluation in step 4, choose one of the following options (or opt for your own hybrid mix):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Option A: <\/strong>Import and update content from your migrated Blackboard course content space &#8211; <a href=\"#copy-import\">continue to Step 6 of this section<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Option B:<\/strong> Build your course unit from fresh in Canvas &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elearning.fse.manchester.ac.uk\/getting-started-with-canvas\/building-content\/\">go to the Building Content section<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you decide to copy your content from your migrated space, or build it from scratch, you will need to locate your <strong>teaching<\/strong> space in Canvas. However, please ensure that your course is published well ahead of the start of semester.
