This article looks at some of the processes involved with managing and releasing marks and feedback in Canvas.
Canvas Gradebook
Gradebook is Canvas’ version of the Grade Centre. Marking and Feedback pages contain links to general guidance about Canvas Gradebook and working with Gradebook.
Reconciling marks
For courses that require first and second markers to mark independently within Canvas, two inboxes will be used. Each submission inbox will have an associated column within Canvas Gradebook.
Staff will only be able to view and download marks from Canvas Gradebook, if anonymous marking is disabled. Therefore, programme teams may wish to choose a date to disable anonymous marking once initial marking is completed and optionally choose to export grades.
- To remove anonymous marking, simply open the assignment, click Edit assignment, remove the tick from the checkbox ‘Graders cannot view student names’ and Save the changes.
- How do I export grades in the Gradebook.
For courses that wish to release an agreed mark via Canvas, an additional column can be created by the eLearning team in Canvas Gradebook. An agreed mark can be calculated offline and then uploaded to Canvas Gradebook.
Uploading grades and feedback to Canvas
Uploading Grades:
It is possible to upload grades into Canvas via a CSV file. You can either:
- Export the Gradebook, to provide a CSV template which grades can be entered into. Or,
- Create a CSV file which meets Canvas requirements for importing grades.
Uploading Feedback:
The eLearning team are currently working on a process for uploading feedback comments into Canvas. Guidance on the format required for uploading feedback will be made available in due course.
Creating additional columns in Canvas Gradebook
Columns in the Canvas Gradebook are only created by adding an assignment in Canvas. Courses that require additional columns in the Gradebook, eg. for uploading an agreed mark should contact the eLearning team for support.
Downloading grades and rubrics
Once grades and feedback have been recorded in Canvas you can export data such as completed rubrics and overall grades.
Grade visibility and grade posting policy
In Canvas a Grade Positing Policy is used to determine when grades are released within Canvas. By default this should be set to Manually Post Grades. To check this setting enter the Grades area from the Course Navigation Menu and click on the Gradebook Settings cog:

Ensure the Grade Posting Policy is set to Manually Post Grades. This will mean that once marking is completed, you can choose to release the grades all at once, at a specific time.

Releasing grades to students
A manual grade posting policy should be in place, meaning that staff need to take action to ‘post grades’ once ready. For step by step instructions on releasing grades see:
How do students access grades?
Once grades and feedback are posted, students will be able to access them via the Grades menu. Below is a link to a step by step instructions for students on how to view grades via Canvas.
