This section discusses adding content to Canvas. If you are looking to copy content migrated from Blackboard, see Moving to Canvas.
Before adding content to Canvas, you should customise the basic course unit template. We also recommend reviewing the advice regarding Creating Accessible Teaching and Learning Materials.
The steps below are a suggested order for setup from a fresh course unit space. You may, of course, do these in another order. Selected articles are linked to support you in moving through these steps, although for a more in-depth treatment of each area, please see the Canvas Instructor Guide.
Step 1: Add your Modules
Modules are used to organise course content by weeks/topics. With modules, you are essentially creating a linear flow of what you would like your students to do. Once you create modules, you can add content items, assign the module, or add requirements.
- Add your Modules: How do I add a module?
- Publish your modules: How do I publish or unpublish a module as an instructor?
Step 2: Add your content
You can add content items directly to your modules as described in the video above or you can add them independently and then link to a module:
The links below provide guidance on adding each content type, setting the availability and linking them to your modules.

When creating a math equation, use the MathJax context menu to interact with the equation and check its accessibility. Visit the section on Math Equation Accessibility for more information.
Step 3: Check your content
You can use the resources below to check over your course unit content.
- How do I use the Accessibility Checker in the Rich Content Editor?
- How do I validate links in a course?
- How do I view a course as a test student using Student View?
You can also use Ally to verify the accessibility of your learning content by reviewing accessibility reports. Visit ‘A Guide to Using Ally on Canvas‘ to learn more.
Step 4: Release your course unit to students
Course units start in the unpublished state, which means that enrolled students cannot see the course unit in their Dashboard. To release a course unit, you can publish it – How do I publish a course?
The course will then become visible to students 7 days prior to the term start date (or, if that has passed, on the date you publish it).
