This guide will take you through a step-by-step process on how to enter grades manually into Canvas Gradebook, and how to bulk upload and bulk download grades and feedback.
How to enter grades manually into Canvas Gradebook
In Canvas Gradebook, you have the option to manually enter grades for student submissions.
Once you are in the correct Canvas course, select Grades from the course menu.
You will then be taken to the Canvas Gradebook for this course.
To enter a grade manually, simply click on the corresponding cell for a student submission, type the grade, and hit enter on your keyboard to save the grade. In the example below a grade of 65 is being entered manually.
If you would like to enter additional details such as comments, annotations and feedback, you can use Canvas SpeedGrader. More information on SpeedGrader can be found at this link: Speed Grader.
How to bulk download grades from the Canvas Gradebook
Canvas gives you the option to download the entire Gradebook as a CSV file.
Click on the Export button located in the top-right corner of the Gradebook screen.
You will then be presented with several options.
Export Current Gradebook View – Exports what you currently see on screen.
Export Entire Gradebook – Exports the entire Gradebook, including any hidden columns.
Previous export(s) – available if you have previously exported data from this course’s Gradebook.
Select your preferred option, and you will then briefly see a download status bar appear at the top of the screen.
Once the progress bar reaches 100%, your downloaded file will be ready to open.
Note: The location of where the file downloads to may vary dependent on your settings, but you can often find the file in your Downloads folder on your computer.
How to bulk upload grades to Canvas Gradebook
Canvas allows you to upload grades using a CSV file, which can be especially helpful when managing a large cohort of students.
Important: To ensure a smooth upload process, we recommend downloading the Gradebook first. This gives you the correct CSV format and helps minimise the risk of errors when uploading grades. Once downloaded, you can input grades directly into the CSV using Excel, then re-upload the updated file to Canvas to apply the changes in bulk.
Follow this guidance to export the Gradebook as a CSV file: export the Gradebook.
Open the downloaded CSV file and locate the assignment that you wish to update results for. In the example below we will be entering marks for Sample Assignment 2. Note: Your downloaded file will differ from the above as each downloaded file contains course-specific information.
Enter the grades for the relevant student(s) ensuring that you edit the correct cell(s). Do not edit any other information in the spreadsheet. In the example below grades have been entered for all students for Sample Assignment 2.
When you have finished entering grades in the CSV file, simply save it. Ensure you save it as a CSV.
Within the Canvas Gradebook, click on Import in the top-right corner of the screen.
Click Choose file.
Locate the CSV file that you have just saved, select it and click Open.
Double check that the file to be uploaded is the correct one. If it is, then click Upload data.
Canvas will then provide you a summary of the changes that will be made. Check the data carefully.
If something doesn’t look right, select Cancel and go back to your CSV file to amend it accordingly before you re-upload the file.
If you are happy with the changes, select Save changes.
Canvas will then present you with the information pop-up below; click OK.
Once the upload is complete you may briefly see a ‘Completed’ pop-up message. If you do not notice this message, then simply check that Gradebook has been updated to reflect the changes that you made in your upload file.
In the example below we can see that Gradebook now reflects the grades that we made and uploaded via the CSV file.
How to bulk download graded rubrics from the Canvas Gradebook
If a rubric has been used to mark a specific assignment, Canvas allows you to bulk download the rubric scores and comments recorded within the rubric.

Locate the assignment column for which you want to download rubrics.
Click the three dots in the column header and select Bulk Download Rubrics.
You can choose to download rubric assessments for all students, completed rubrics or incomplete rubrics. Select the preferred choice.
Click Download.
The rubric assessments will download as a CSV file.
