CPD  Teaching Awards

Teaching Awards

Colleagues across our Faculty regularly demonstrate innovative and inclusive teaching practice, going the extra mile to ensure our students’ learning experience is the very best it can be. Whether you know a colleague who does great work or want to celebrate your own teaching practice, the University has several awards dedicated to recognising excellence in teaching and learning.

Teaching Excellence Awards

The University’s Teaching Excellence Awards recognise colleagues who demonstrate a significant and sustained commitment to delivering and/or supporting excellence in teaching and learning at the UG and PGT level. Colleagues can self-nominate with the written support of a senior colleague or nominate another colleague.

Award categories align with the University’s strategic themes. The core criteria against which awards will be judged are Reach, Value and Impact. Applicants for team awards should also demonstrate how they work together to support student learning and how their approach has influenced others. As of 2021, nominations can be made in either the form of a written submission or a pre-recorded presentation. Consideration should be given to which format best allows submissions to highlight the Reach, Value and Impact of the nominee’s work.

Colleagues in the Faculty of Science and Engineering who wish to discuss Teaching Excellence Award nominations can contact Dr Andy Weightman.

Distinguished Achievement Awards

The Faculty is invited annually to nominate an individual for the Teacher of the Year award – one of the University’s Distinguished Achievement Awards. Nominees for this award should demonstrate:

  • Outstanding teaching over the previous year academic year;
  • The ability to communicate ideas effectively, and in an engaging manner;
  • The ability to motivate and stimulate students to learn;
  • A commitment to innovation and excellence in education.

The Teaching, Learning and Student Experience team co-ordinate the nomination process between September and January, ready for submission to the Office of the President and Vice Chancellor in late January. The Awards and Honours Group meet in early April and the successful nominees are invited to a ceremony at the beginning of summer.

Please contact Linda Mulvey with any Distinguished Achievement Award queries.

National Teaching Fellowship

The National Teaching Fellow (NTF) scheme is an external award scheme coordinated by Advance HE. The University can nominate up to three candidates each year. NTF candidates should have an excellent track record in teaching and learning with a national and international reputation. The scheme is co-ordinated internally by the Institute of Teaching and Learning (ITL) and Teaching and Learning Group (TLG).

Colleagues interested in applying for a National Teaching Fellowship can join the NTF/CATE Pipeline Programme. This is a collaborative programme between The University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, University of Liverpool and Northumbria University which offers an opportunity to network with other potential applicants as well as current NTFs and CATE winners from across the four institutions.

For more information and to join the pipeline programme, see the ITL Awards webpage. Please direct any queries to Patricia Clift Martin (Teaching and Learning Manager, Institute of Teaching and Learning).

Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence

ITL and TLG also coordinate submissions for the Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE). This is another external award administered by Advance HE which seeks to recognise and reward collaborative work that has had a demonstrable impact on teaching and learning. The University can nominate one team per year

SU Education Awards

The annual SU Education Awards allow students to recognise teaching, and teaching-related, staff who have had a positive impact on their teaching and learning experience. The awards run annually and include categories for ‘Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant’ and ‘Excellent Support Staff’.

There are also many externally administered awards specific to your discipline areas. If you make a submission or win an award, contact Professor Andy Weightman so this can be celebrated in your Teaching Academy newsletter.
