Resources for improving feedback to students

Improving the provision of feedback to students is a key focus for us as a faculty. And, despite the fact that feedback is one of the most powerful influences on learning and achievement (top 10 influences on student achievement) about a third of experiments show that some ways of introducing feedback significantly reduce student achievement. So feedback is important but it has to be done right; our expectations might not match our student’s needs.

James Brooks has created two short videos that summarise the research on effective feedback and a one page hand-out for evaluating the feedback on your courses (link). For those that want to learn more, a great introduction to this topic is Hattie and Clarke’s book Visible Learning: Feedback, there is a summary of the work in chapter 4 (p45) of the book Applying Science of Learning in Education (available online for free).
