FSE Online Exam Guidance for Students

The January 2021 exams will take place online using Blackboard. This guide is designed to help students access their exams and complete their submissions.

Getting Ready for an Online Exam

Home Environment & Technology Set-up:

  • Choose a quiet place with adequate lighting.
  • Sit at a desk with a computer chair if possible.
  • Make sure you have plenty of room to work.
  • If possible, use an ethernet cable to connect to the Internet for a more reliable connection.
  • If you are using a laptop, plug your charger in or keep it close by.

Blackboard Access:

  • Make sure you have access to all the relevant Blackboard courses and are able to login to Blackboard in advance of the exam period, see the advice on Blackboard in this section if you have any trouble accessing Blackboard.

It is important you are using a suitable internet browser for your online exam. If your browser is outdated, you may experience problems using Blackboard. Please use one of the following supported internet browsers and versions for to access your online exam.

We recommend that you have at least TWO of the following available to you on your computer.

Important: Internet Explorer (all versions) is no longer supported by Blackboard, so please do not use this desktop browser.

Accessing your Exam in Blackboard

  • Log into Blackboard well in advance of the exam start time… But you will need to refresh your browser at exam start time to see the Links
  • If you cannot remember your password, use the ‘Forgotten your password?’ link and following one of the options to recover your password.
  • On the Blackboard home page, select the Blackboard course for the exam you are taking.
  • Open the page where your unit co-ordinator has advised you the exam will appear (e.g., Assessment & Feedback page).
  • Technical or other problems (e.g., unwell) – Contact your Department office via exam support email provided by your department
  • Read the instructions carefully, these will include details of how to contact your department if you have any exam queries
  • Use the allocated time wisely – Don’t leave submission to the very last minute, submit during “business hours” whenever possible.

Multiple Choice Exams/Test type Exams

  • The exam link will appear at the start of the exam (09:00am for the vast majority of exams).
  • You may have to refresh the webpage for the exam link to appear.
  • As soon as you click on the exam link and click Begin, the exam timer will start.
  • Timer warnings appear when half the time, 5 minutes, 1 minute, and 30 seconds remain.
  • Blackboard will automatically save your answers as you work.
  • When you have finished, click the Save and Submit button and confirm:

  • You will not be able to go back into the exam after this point.
  • If you haven’t submitted and the exam timer has finished, the exam will automatically submit on your behalf.

Things that may go wrong

  • Images/formula/code or other items may not appear in questions… This is typically resolved by using another browser. If changing browser doesn’t fix the problem please contact your department on the contact email provided by them.

Assignment Exams

  • The exam paper and submission links will appear at the start of the exam on the morning of your exam (09:00am for the vast majority of exams).
  • If you are using Microsoft Word to answer exam questions, save your work regularly.
  • There will be sufficient time for you to successfully upload your work
  • Once you have uploaded and submitted your work, you will receive a digital receipt to your student email to confirm your submission. Students are responsible for ensuring their submissions are correct, please make sure that not only you receive the digital receipt but that it confirms the correct document has been submitted.
